Genetic Testing

At-Risk Decision Path & Anonymous Genetic Testing Path

Pathway Program: Counseling & Genetic Testing

This two-part highly confidential program is offered to individuals who are at-risk for HD. This path is carefully designed to help navigate the emotional complexity of making informed decisions. Prior to beginning the program, please review the Decision Check List. We will discuss this checklist and some practical issues, such as insurance, before we start. Below is a roadmap of what the process looks like.

Part 1: At-Risk Decision Path

People at-risk for HD will work with a licensed clinician who will help develop skills and coping mechanisms to prepare for making decisions such as genetic testing. A final evaluation by a psychiatrist will also be offered. Many of these sessions are available via teletherapy where the client can log into a virtual meeting room to talk with their counselor. All information will be kept confidential unless you tell HD Reach otherwise.

The fee for this path is $750. Call 919.803.8128 to get started.

Part 2: Anonymous Genetic Testing Path

To obtain genetic testing for HD, the Decision Path is a prerequisite. Once approved by HD Reach staff, anonymous testing is offered. This path includes the genetic swab test using a pseudonym, that is delivered to your home. In addition, the client and their support system will receive their testing results by the HD Reach staff member familiar to them. Regardless of the testing outcome, a personalized post-testing plan will be provided.

The fee for this path is $450. Call 919.803.8128 to get started.

If you are interested in signing up for this path, please call us.

All fees can be paid with cash, checks, Visa or MasterCard. HD Reach is answerable only to you and does not accept insurance. However, we can provide you with documentation for you to file with your insurance.

FAQs

What kinds of questions will HD Reach ask prior to starting the At-Risk Path?

HD Reach will ask you about your HD family history and about why you have decided to explore HD gene testing options. We will provide education about obtaining benefits, such as long-term care insurance.  We will also answer any questions you have about the HD Reach Paths. The information from this call will be provided to the therapist who will work with you. It will also prepare you for the next steps before you begin the At-Risk Path.

Where do I need to be located to participate in the At-Risk and Genetic Testing Path?

Due to HD Reach staff licensing, you would need to physically be in the state of North Carolina or Virginia for the online appointments. If you reside outside of these states, the HD Reach team can work with you to explore options. These options include arranging appointments while you are staying at a hotel or visiting someone who resides in NC or VA.

If I use my credit card to pay for the At-Risk and Genetic Testing Path, how is the information kept anonymous?

Your payment will be connected to your real name within HD Reach. You will be anonymous to the lab used to process your sample. You will pay HD Reach directly and no identifying information will be shared with the lab. All samples are processed under pseudonyms (false names). If you prefer to pay with a check or cash, you can mail your payment to HD Reach.

What type of sample is collected for the Genetic Testing Path?

HD Reach works with a lab called Prevention Genetics. Prevention Genetics provides each client with a saliva collection kit. HD Reach will arrange a time for you to open and collect the saliva sample while a staff member of HD Reach is online with you. A pre-addressed and pre-paid return box will be provided. The sample will need to be dropped off at the designated shipping location.

How long does it typically take for my result to come back after submitting the sample?

HD Reach will schedule your online result visit no less than four weeks from the date your saliva sample is received in the lab.

How long does the entire At-Risk and Genetic Testing Path take?

It can take anywhere from three to five months, depending on scheduling availability.

How soon can I begin the process?

After you speak with a member of the HD Reach team, you will be sent electronic documents (via email) which should be reviewed and signed. You will also receive a payment link. Once the signed electronic documents are returned and payment for the At-Risk Path is received, you will be connected with the therapist to schedule your initial appointment.

What happens after I receive my result? Does HD Reach offer post-testing support?

After your online result visit, your therapist will schedule a follow up check-in appointment. This is typically scheduled two-weeks after your result visit. The HD Reach team will then reach out in one month and check-in intermittently to follow up throughout the year.

Should there be a desire for additional support, the HD Reach team will be available to provide information about resources, group or individual therapy, or to have follow-up conversations. While the At-Risk and Genetic Testing Path will end, the HD Reach team will be available to support you on your journey.
